Using a tow bar safely

most common mistakes and how to avoid them

Using a tow bar is not rocket science, unless the ball gets stuck, the lights malfunction, or the trailer seems to want to go in a completely different direction than you. Fortunately, with a few simple checks and the right routines, you can keep everything under control. In this article, we'll cover the most important things to remember for safe tow bar use.

Before you get going

When the trailer is connected to the car, it is important to make a few quick checks before leaving. A few minutes of effort can prevent a serious accident, so it is not worth cutting corners here.

First, make sure that the trailer hitch is securely locked into the tow ball. When you lift the hitch, the trailer should not come off the ball; the locking mechanism must be completely engaged. If you are using a detachable tow ball, check that it is securely attached to the car. Most models have indicators or color markings that show the locking status. Also, remember to remove the key from the latch before driving off.

Next, check that the trailer's electrical connector is firmly attached to the socket and that the trailer lights are working. A loose connector can cause the lights to flicker or malfunction while driving. Finally, it is a good idea to check that the electrical cable is not too tight, so that it does not get damaged when the car turns. However, the cable must be tight enough so that it does not end up dragging on the ground.

The most common mistakes and their consequences

Problems with tow bars are relatively rare, but mistakes do happen. For example, if the hand grip on the trailer drawbar is not fully lowered into the locked position, the trailer may become detached while driving. The same applies to a detachable tow bar – if the ball is not fully attached to its socket, it may come loose while driving. An out-of-control trailer is always a major traffic safety risk.

It is also important to note that the detachable ball should not be left permanently attached to the car, as over time its moving mechanism may become jammed. This makes it difficult to detach and attach the ball, and in the worst case, the ball may become completely jammed or the locking mechanism may stop working.

Maintenance helps prevent problems

The tow bar should be serviced regularly. The ball part of the detachable hook should be removed after use and stored in a dry place, such as the trunk of the car. In addition, regular gentle cleaning and lubrication, if necessary, will prevent rusting and keep the locking mechanism in function. If the ball part looks worn or otherwise defective, it should not be used until its condition has been checked. If necessary, new ball parts are available as spare parts.

Ask yourself the following questions before departure:

🔹Is the trailer hitch securely locked to the ball?
🔹 Is the detachable tow ball securely attached?
🔹 Is the trailer's electrical connector securely in place?
🔹 Are the trailer lights working properly?
🔹 Is the electrical cable loose enough, but not dragging on the ground?

If yes to all of the above, you're good to hit the road!
